1863-1935. French artist. In 1884 he joined
with Georges Seurat in founding the Societe
des Artistes Independants and developing the
technique of Pointillism. Signac, born in
Paris, was inspired by the Impressionist
painter Monet. He laid down the theory of
Neo-Impressionism in his book De Delacroix au
Neo-Impressionisme 1899. From the 1890s he
developed a stronger and brighter palette. He
and Matisse painted together in the south of
France 1904-05.
